#### Course Description

Mathematics and Further Mathematics AS/A2 Level AS Level - 1 year course A2 Level - 2 year course Introduction The ability to think mathematically and to use mathematical techniques to solve problems is one of the key skills that underlie much of modern life. A surprisingly wide range of University courses have mathematical or statistical components and doing this course will give you the necessary background for these. It is also a fascinating and most enjoyable subject in its own right. Our scheme allows you to choose modules which support your other Advanced level subjects and fit in with your interests and career aspirations. Entry requirements What will I study? All students will take a mixture of modules from Pure Maths and from the Applications. Pure Maths is taken by all students. Its main topics are algebra, trigonometry and calculus, which is the study of rates of change, graphs and areas under curves. The Applications: Statistics - concerned with probability theory, the analysis of data and the testing of hypotheses. Mechanics - the application of Pure Maths to the study of force and motion. AS-Level Maths consists of three modules, two of Pure Maths with one of either Statistics or Mechanics. A-level Maths consists of an additional three modules, two of Pure Maths and one of either Statistics or Mechanics. Further Mathematics For strong Mathematicians who wish to prepare themselves thoroughly for Maths based courses at University, we offer a 9 module course which leads to A-level Maths and AS-level Further Maths and a 12 module course which leads to A-levels in Maths and Further Maths. Both AS and A-level Further Maths require modules in Further Pure Maths. This is a more in-depth look at Pure Maths and covers topics including complex numbers, matrices and vectors. The other modules are selected from a range including Statistics, Mechanics, Decision Maths and more Pure Maths. Key Skills Key skills are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general. Application of Number Communication Information Technology How will I be assessed? Each module has a 1 hour examination. There is no coursework at AS-level. At A-level there is coursework in one of the A2 Pure Maths modules and a comprehension paper with the other. There may be coursework in Further Maths depending on the modules studied. Materials and text books Text books will need to be purchased and you will need a scientific calculator. Career prospects A and AS-level Maths are tremendously valuable qualifications for employment and University entrance. A-level Maths is accepted as a good general entrance qualification for most degree courses, is vital for such things as Physics, Electronics and Engineering and is strongly encouraged for courses such as Medicine and Computer Science.
