Course Description

Course Overview The National Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering is a nationally approved programme equivalent to three A Levels. If you wish to have a career in any branch of design and manufacturing from Automobile to Aeronautical Engineering, this is the perfect course for you. After completing the course you could look for work in areas such as: Automotion and Robotics, Design of Products and Systems, Supervision or Management of Manufacturing Processes, Manufacturing Systems and Technology, Engineering Materials or Computer Aided Design and Manufacture. We encourage career planning and team building by off-site visits and activities and visiting expert speakers. Course Structure The course is made up of nine Units per year. You will achieve a BTEC National Award if you pass six Units in Year One, and you will be awarded a BTEC National Diploma is awarded if you pass at least 16 Units in total. You will also study useful Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Communication Technology. How Will I Learn? Discussing technical subject matter Watching demonstrations Working at practical tasks, following verbal and written guidelines Working on technical problems, eg using theory to predict what a circuit will do Working on a major individual project Writing reports and projects Skills You Will Develop Use of technical equipment, eg materials test instruments (such as tensile tester), metrology instruments, electrical instruments (such as digital multi-meter) Use of computers and specialist CAD and CAM software An understanding of technology and how to solve technical problems How to work safely and be aware of Health and Safety issues The ability to work as part of a team Benefits You will: Use laboratories equipped with computers and other test equipment. (Approximately half of your classes are based in labs) Use classrooms, including some that have computers which run specialist engineering software Spend time away from the college on team-building and educational visits, eg to a Paintball centre or a manufacturing plant Expect Also To Work on technical problems; individually and in groups Use the Library and reference books Use the Internet and CD-Roms to find information Use catalogues of electronic components Use computers, CAD, engineering software, word-processing etc. How You Will Be Assessed Internally set continuous assessment Several assignments per unit Completion of a major project Presentations to your group Tests (very occasionally) Entry Requirements Four GCSEs at Grade A to C, including Maths and Science or a suitable BTEC First Certificate or a GNVQ Intermediate in Engineering or equivalent or any similar level qualification Credit may be given for substantial relevant experience. Irrespective of qualifications and experience, you will be interviewed and given an aptitude test. Acceptance on the course is then subject to the approval of the Course Team.
