Sportsturf Introductory Diploma Land and Environment (Sportsturf) Myerscough reference: 09IDLETMYF01P Course Length: 2 Years full time Venue: Myerscough College, Preston About the Course This new BTEC Introductory Diploma is designed to encourage students to develop the personal skills and qualities needed for work, learning and helping to achieve their full potential. It is intended as a practical 'hands-on' qualification and will teach students the basics of sportsturf whilst also exploring the career opportunities offered in the sector. The Introductory Diploma incorporates different aspects of the work environment encouraging students to discover the relationship between job choices and lifestyle, safe working practices and how to develop skills relevant to the sportsturf industry specifically, and other jobs within the land-based sector. The course will emphasise: ? Safe working ? Myerscough Skills-Adult Literacy and Numeracy skills are an integral part of the syllabus and play an important role in developing students skills with assignment writing ? Concern for the environmental issues related to land based industries ? Practical sportsturf skills Assessment - The Introductory Diploma is assessed by a combination of practical assessments, course work and spotter tests. There are no examinations. List of Modules Year One ? Starting Work in the Land-based Industries - You will find out about the different types of jobs available within the land based industries and consider the relationship between lifestyle and job choices. ? Skills Development in the Land-based Industries - You will learn how to identify specific skills, plan for and practise them. ? Financial Management Students will gain knowledge and confidence to manage their money, taking into consideration how money is earned and developing skills in personal budgeting. ? Land-based Machinery Operation - You will safely operate land-based machinery with a variety of attachments in a number of situations. Year Two ? Working Safely in the Land-based Industries - This module looks what it means to work safely and examines procedures, job terms, induction and training. ? Personal Effectiveness - Within this module the student will look at developing a CV and will also carry out some work experience. ? Plants and Soil - You will study the internal and external characteristics and functions of plants and learn practical soil management techniques. ? Practical Estate Skills - This module is mainly made up of practical skills such as basic construction using hard landscape material and wood, and the maintenance of structures and surfaces. Possible Careers / Jobs The Introductory Diploma will enable the learner to have the opportunity to move onto the NPTC Level 2 National Certificate Sport and Amenity Turf Maintenance or a career with the sportsturf industry. Progression The learners will be able to progress on the First Diplima Sportsturf providing that the students are capable of achieving two Level One Key Skills such as communication, number or Information Technology. Special Requirements Equipment and/or Clothing Sensible outdoor clothing is expected for practical work. Steel toe capped boots/Wellingtons are essential.
