Course Description

International Health and Social Care National Certificate OCR Introduction This is a work related qualification specialising in the health and social care sector which prepares students for higher-level study or employment within the sector. Requirements You will need an IELTS Band 5.5 plus 3 GCSEs at Grade D or above or equivalent qualifications as determined by the Course Co-ordinator. In order to progress you must gain at least a merit each year of the course.. A Criminal Record Bureau check will need to be completed for work placements. References may be taken into consideration. What will I study? There is a mixture of theory and practical work within this course. It will help you to understand and choose the areas of work that you might like to specialise in within the Health and Social Care sector. You will study the following core units and two of the optional units: 1st year 6 Mandatory Units: Working as a team in health and social care. Investigating health and social care provision. Introducing practical caring. Investigating options for work in health and social care. Communication skills in health and social care. Problem solving in health and social care. 6 Optional Units which may include the following: Exploring leisure and recreational activities for service users in health and social care. Forming effective relationships with service users in health, social care and early years settings. Using aids to help with the physical care of service users. Dealing with minor accidents in care settings. Reducing risks to service users in care settings. Planning and preparing a meal for a service user in a care setting. Students completing these qualifications will also be expected to study key skills at a relevant level. Other employment linked qualifications such as First Aid may be part of the programme of study. 2nd year Four Mandatory Units: Preparing to give quality care Communicating with service users in care settings Practical caring Hygiene and safety in care settings Two Optional Units which may include: Health care for children Health care for older service users Development and care of young children Preparing to work with young children Preparing to work with older service users Preparing to work with people with disabilities Practical first aid in care settings Nutrition and cooking for health Creative activities with individuals in care settings Career planning for the health and social care sector Work experience in health and social care settings There are no timetabled exams for this qualification. 3rd Year Work placement year. You will be required to attend one induction session and four workshops covering the knowledge required for NVQ3 Health and Social Care. The level 3 awards consists of four core units (one of which is contextualised to the Adults Pathway): UNIT HSC31 Promote effective communication for and about individuals UNIT HSC32 Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the working environment UNIT HSC33 Reflect on and develop your practice UNIT HSC35 Promote choice, well being and the protection of all individuals Plus four optional units which reflect your job role. There are additional units for continuing professional development (CPD). You will be given guidance on the presentation of knowledge evidence, but your assessor will guide you in building your portfolio of evidence that you will present for accreditation. How will I be assessed? All units are centreassessed and externally moderated by an OCR Visiting Moderator. All units are graded: Pass, Merit, Distinction. Full award certificates will be graded: Pass, Merit. Distinction. Key Skills Communication, Application of numbers, IT Work Experience In order to complete this programme of study students have to attend a work placement in the Health and Social Care field.
