HUMAN BIOLOGY - A LEVEL AS / A Levels : Full time The specification (syllabus) consists of 6 modules: Year 1 AS Modules:- Module 1 Molecules, cells and systems. The organisation of organisms into cells, tissues and organs. The structure and functioning of cells and the regulation of biochemical reactions by enzymes. Exchange and transport of materials by the respiratory and blood systems. Module 3 Pathogens and disease. The study of a variety of organisms that can cause human disease, and the bodys defences against them. The structure and function of genes and how genetic disorders may be caused. The use of gene technology in combating disease. The study of heart disease and cancer. Methods of diagnosis and control. Module 4 Centre Assessed Coursework. Teacher assessed practical skills. Year 2 A2 Modules:- Module 5 A) Variation and the mechanisms of inheritance and evolution. How genetic information is passed from generation to generation. How natural selection acting on genetic variation is thought to have led to the enormous diversity of living organisms. B) The biology of ecosystems. How energy flows and nutrients are cycled through ecosystems. The effect of human activity on the environment. Module 7 The human life span. How the processes of reproduction, growth and ageing demonstrate the importance of the interaction of physiological systems throughout the life of an individual. Module 8/9 Centre assessed coursework. Teacher assessment of practical skills. Duration: 2 year(s) Entry Requirements: You will need at least 5 GCSEs including Double Science or GCSE Biology or Human Biology.
