#### Course Description

Further Mathematics Level: Level 3 - AS/A2 Full-time How long is the course/training? AS: one-year A2: one-year What will I be doing on the course/training? Students who are good at and enjoy doing Mathematics are encouraged to take Further Mathematics in addition to their Mathematics course, details of which appear on another sheet. It may be taken at AS Level (3 extra units) either in the first or second year of a two-year course. Students taking Further Mathematics in their first year may proceed to the A2 Further Mathematics course in the second year. In the AS Further Mathematics course, students study two applied mathematics units and one unit of pure mathematics. Further Pure 1: This unit comprises pure mathematics techniques. Topics include graphs and inequalities, matrices, algebra, complex numbers, series and proof by induction. Decision 1: This unit includes networks [shortest path and minimum connector problems], linear programming [an optimisation technique], critical path analysis, simulation and algorithms [methods of solving problems]. Statistics 2: This unit extends the material covered in Statistics 1 and incorporates bivariate data, the Poisson distribution and the Normal distribution, including the use of contingency tables. In the A2 Further Mathematics course, students study two further pure mathematics units plus a final applied mathematics unit. The course follows the MEI Structured Mathematics Course. Course/Training Code: To be confirmed Where do I study/train? Hele Road What are the entry requirements? You need at least five GCSE C grades with English Language at C+ and Mathematics at grade A*. Students receiving grade A at GCSE Mathematics will also be considered in conjunction with other GCSE grades (generally these would have to be As rather than Bs). What can I do after this course/training? Mathematics is a valuable qualification for Scientific and Engineering degrees and has links with many other subjects including Business Studies, Computing, Geography, Economics, Biology, Environmental Science and Psychology. What key skills will I do? If you are taking a 3-AS level programme you will do a key skill to support your study. If you are taking 4 or more AS subjects we will discuss key skills at your interview. What residential/work experience is there? None Specified What faculty is the course/training in? Maths and Science How to Apply? Get an application form through school, Connexions or by contacting the college. For more information refer to the 'How to Apply' page. How do I study the course/training and how will I be assessed? By a mixture of group lectures, individual support and self-learning study materials. There will also be extensive use of graphical calculators and computer software. External assessment will be by 3 unit examinations (each 1 hour 30 minutes) for the AS level course, and a further 3 unit examinations for the A level course. One of the A2 units has an internally assessed coursework component, contributing 20% of the mark for that component. What facilities are there? You will have access to a learning resource centre. There is a refectory in the Hele Building. An A-level Mathematics workshop ensures that you get all the Mathematics help you need outside group lectures. What will the course/training cost me? This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course). If you are 19 or over please contact us to find out costs. Additional costs: Textbooks cost approx ?30 per year (there are some second-hand ones available). You will need a scientific calculator with statistical functions. You will also find a graphical calculator very useful. These may be purchased at a discount through the College. Previous students' views: Coming soon...
