The course dates for Year 1 are; Start Autumn Term: Week Commencing 21st September 2009. Finish Autumn Term: Week Commencing 14th December 2009. Start Spring Term: Week Commencing 25th January 2010. Finish Spring Term: Week Commencing 26th March 2010. Start Summer Term: Week Commencing 19th April 2010. Finish Summer Term: Week Commencing 18th june 2010. Level Foundation Degree in Construction Management - Level 5 Who is it for? This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to be employed as a professional in the construction industry as the course has considerable standing as a requirement for career development. The course covers a number of topics such as law, management principles, construction technology and design, surveying and AutoCAD. It is also suitable for those people who wish to ultimately progress onto a full degree in a construction related discipline. Interview / Skills Assessment An informal interview is required with the tutor before joining this course. What will I need? Either a National Certificate / Diploma in Building Studies / Construction or appropriate A Levels (which may require extra study in construction related modules, at course team's discretion). If you have previously undertaken a Higher National Certificate in Construction you have the opportunity to progress directly into the third year of the Foundation Degree. What is covered? Year 1 Part Time ?? Foundation Degree in Construction Management An Introduction to Technology and Design Students will learn the common materials and methods of construction of both new and traditional housing, by considering in turn each of the main elements of the buildings' structure. They will also study the requirements of the internal environment, so as to understand how services installations contribute to user comfort. Other basic aspects such as the personnel involved, health and safety requirements and specialised terminology will be illustrated as appropriate to support this. The module is also designed to provide an insight into the behaviour and properties for a variety of materials commonly used in the construction of buildings and civil engineering projects. The importance of health and safety in the construction industry, not as an add-on, but as part of the construction process is taught. Learning and Practical Skills Development (HE and Work) Students will gain an appreciation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills for research, information management and presentation purposes. The module will enable students to gain experience in applying elementary surveying techniques of levelling and linear measurement, both for detail acquisition and setting out. The relevant mathematical skills will be introduced and developed contextually. Students will be introduced to basic 2D drafting techniques using a powerful set of tools. Skills in this medium are highly sought after in the construction industry. Work Related Learning in the Built Environment This module allows students to negotiate a structured set of specific objectives related to the world of work, which are to be achieved within the module. Students will be encouraged to take additional responsibility for their own learning.The student will be expected to submit the agreed deliverables in the agreed format at the end of the module period.
