Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdEng) Electrical/Electronic Engineering What you will study Year 1 Digital Electronics (10 credits) Provides a solid grounding in combinational and sequential logic circuit design. Electrical & Electronic Principles (20 credits) Provides an in depth coverage of circuit network analysis and some logic content Engineering Management Principles (10 credits) This aims to provide a broad introduction to the study of engineering organisations and their management. Engineering Mathematics (20 credits) This module will provide you with the mathematical tools needed to undertake the other technical modules on the course and also enable a student to progress onto a full degree course. Engineering Science (20 credits) The module provides you with an appreciation of a broad spectrum of engineering topics in both mechanical and electrical/electronic eng. Research Methods & Study Skills 1 (10 credits) The module aims to develop your capacity to apply a range of academic skills appropriately within a chosen discipline. Year 2 Business Improvement Techniques (10 credits) The module aims to highlight how engineering organisations use business improvement techniques to improve their overall performance. Electronics & Circuit Design (20 credits) The module will look at various amplifiers and oscillators (op-amp based and transistor based) Micro Electronics (20 credits) The aim of this unit is to provide you with an understanding of typical microprocessor-based systems and to study their use in instrumentation/control/communication systems. A big emphasis is placed on carrying out various practical exercises to develop programming skills. Programmable Logic Controllers (10 credits) This unit has been designed to cover Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) concepts and their applications in engineering. Again a big emphasis is placed on carrying out various practical exercises to develop programming skills. Utilisation of Electrical Energy (10 credits) This modules is all about the transmission of electrical power and its safe use and utilisation. Research Methods & Study Skills 2 (10 credits) The module aims to enhance your skills in academic writing and information research, introduce and apply a range of research methodologies and instruments and argue convincingly. Year 3 Learning in Action 1: Applying Skills & Competences (20 credits) This module aims to identify how to apply acquired knowledge, skills, concepts and theories gained. Learning in Action 2: Theory meets Practice L4 (10 credits) This module aims to develop your capacity to apply knowledge, skills, concepts and theories Learning in Action 3: Research in Action at Work (20 credits) This module aims to consolidate previously developed knowledge and skills in order to encourage the development of original, critical and independent thinking applicable to a range of workplace practices, appropriate to the discipline. Learning in Action 4: Personal Learning and Development (20 credits) The module aims to enable you to create a comprehensive and relevant personal enhancement plan by identifying a range of academic and specialist developmental needs. Who the course is for How you will study How you will be assessed The methods of assessment aim to develop your intellectual ability and confidence in problem solving and presentation. All modules require the submission and passing of written assignments and exams plus, in some specific modules oral presentations, group work and projects are required. Qualification Title Validated and awarded by the University of Wales Course Length The course is two years full-time or three years part-time.
