Motorsports First Diploma Motorsports Myerscough reference: 10FDVTMMYF01P Course Length: 1 year full-time Venue: Myerscough College, Preston About the Course Please note that this course will change to a Level 2 Diploma for September 2010, as part of the nationwide restructure to fit the new National Qualifications and Credit Framework. The content and academic level will be similar and details will be published as soon as they are available. Please use the current course title on your application form for the time being. This course provides you with a basic introduction to motorsports. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine practical based training with sound theoretical knowledge. The course is designed to give you a broad overview of the industry, with a view to progressing to one of our National Certificate or National Diploma courses or to start work in the industry. You will begin to learn the various workshop practices that are required in the preparation and inspection of motorsport vehicles before, during and after motorsport events. You will also gain an introduction to motor mechanics: from routine maintenance, fault diagnosis and safe working practices to electrics, transmissions, engines, brakes, suspension and body systems. List of Modules ? Essential Working Practices in Vehicle Technology - Safe and effective workshop practice including the use of tools, facilities and materials. ? Vehicle Electrical and Electronic Principles - Introduction to electrical and electronic systems on motorsports vehicles. ? Engineering Skills for Vehicle Repair - Learning the necessary skills to carry out maintenance and rectification of faults in vehicle systems. ? Vehicle Component Removal and Refitting Techniques - Provides necessary skills to use tools and equipment to carry out the removal and refitting of a range of vehicle components and systems. ? Vehicle Layout and Operation of Vehicle Systems - Focuses on a range of systems and layouts including transmissions, steering, brakes, suspension and body systems. ? Vehicle Fault Diagnosis - Learning of accurate methods of fault finding and choice of effective remedial action. ? Principles and Applications of Vehicle Electrical Systems and Components - Focuses on the main electrical components and systems including vehicle lighting, auxiliary components, batteries, starters and alternators. ? Motorsport Vehicle Inspection - Focuses on the technical skills and qualities needed to prepare a vehicle for inspection at a motorsports event. ? Stripping and Rebuilding Motorsports Engines (Pre-Competition) - Using specialist tools and equipment to dismantle and remove engine components. Inspection and checking of components and rebuilding to meet motorsports standards and specifications. Assessments Assessments will include assignments and practical work. There are no formal examinations on the First Diploma. Possible Careers / Jobs ? Engineering apprenticeship ? Motorsports team trainee ? Stores person ? Trainee sales person ? Trainee engineer Progression This course provides a sound foundation in the practical and theoretical skills necessary to start a career in modern engineering. Alternatively, the course allows entry onto National Certificate/ National Diplomas, for instance ND Landbased Mechanisation or NC/ ND Vehicle Technology (Motorsports) and then onto higher education courses such as Foundation Degrees in either Motorsports or Landbased Machinery Management and Logistics. Special Requirements 1. Equipment and clothing: Clean overalls and suitable protection footwear 2. Minimum age: 16 years old. 3. Extra costs: Although not essential for the course, students may wish to buy books.
