Course Description

Main features This course is designed to make degree study accesible to a wider range of people and is suitable for those who have been out of education for a long period of time or who have limited qualifications. It a includes a foundation year for students without A levels, those who want to return to education after a period of employment, after a career break or to make a career change. During this foundation year you will develop both the academic and equine related skills which you will need to succeed on the second and third years of the course. This degree is awarded and validated by Harper Adams University College. Entry requirements You will need to provide evidence of your ability to work at GCSE level or the equivalent. There will also be an interview with a course tutor to discuss your previous experience and motivation. You wll need to provide suitable yard clothes consisting of jodhpurs, boots, waterproof jacket, gloves and hat. In addition, students taking the riding module will require a body protectors. Cost for external visits (eg Newmarket, Horse of the Year Show) will be kept to a minimum but you will usually need to make some financial contribution of your own. What you will study During the first (foundation) year, you will study modules such as an Introduction to Equitation and Horse Care, and Preparatory Academic Skills. Completition of these modules will then lead onto more specialist topics such as Equine Anatomy and Physiology, Equine Injury, Repair and Rehabilitation and Practical Equine Management. You will also undertaken a minimum of 50 hours works experience. Our staff can help you to find suitable placements. Assesment A variety of assessment methods are used, ranging from presentations to practical work, reports and riding assessents. There are also some written exams.
