Environmental Studies Level: Level 3 - AS/A2 Full-time How long is the course/training? AS: one-year A2: one-year What will I be doing on the course/training? Environmental Studies enables students to gain a deep and well informed insight into the environment, and the scientific processes that control and affect it. The central theme is the development of the understanding of how different events and cycles within the environment interrelate, how they influence subsequent environmental events, the human impacts on these events and cycles and the strategies that can be used to minimise the problems caused. Key aspects include Wildlife Conservation, Global Climate Change and Sustainability. This course is 100% exam based assessment. There is no coursework. AS units Unit 1: The Living Environment - topics covered include the reasons why the conservation of life on earth is important, methods which may be used to achieve effective conservation, conservation in the UK, coral reefs, Antarctica and tropical rainforests and ecological relationships between organisms and their abiotic and biotic environment. Unit 2: The Physical Environment - topics covered include atmospheric gases, water and mineral nutrients. Human exploitation and the management of physical resources to provide higher living standards. Looking at unsustainable natural resources. A2 units Unit 3: Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution - topics covered include future problems of energy supply and how these may be resolved. Properties of pollutants to explain why some materials or forms of energy cause environmental damage and ways of minimising such damage. Unit 4: Biological Resources - topics covered include factors controlling human population growth in relation to the demands placed upon the planet's resources and life-support systems, food production and forestry systems and the study of the sustainability of human lifestyles. You need at least five GCSE C grades with English Language and Maths at C+ including GCSE Double Award Science grades CC. What can I do after this course/training? You could progress to Higher Education or a variety of careers or voluntary work in the sphere of the environment such as working for The Environment Agency, National Trust or conservation agencies. A sound scientific basis is also regarded as a good starting point for many careers and courses. What key skills will I do? If you are taking a 3-AS level programme you will do a key skill to support your study. If you are taking 4 or more AS subjects we will discuss key skills at your interview. You will be taught through lectures, practical work, case studies and small group work. You will have access to fully-equipped laboratories, IT equipment and CD ROM. During the course there will be ongoing assessment of your progress by tests, essays and other questions. Each unit is assessed by written exam between 1-2 hours long. AS unit 1 exam is taken in January and unit 2 in June. A2 unit 3 is taken in January the following year and unit 4 in June. What facilities are there? You will have access to a learning resource centre. There is a refectory based in the Hele Building. What will the course/training cost me? This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years.
