Course Description

UCLAN FD TECHNOLOGY Code: 9650/1A COURSE DURATION: 30 Week(s) COURSE DATES: 21 September 2009 to 17 June 2011 MODE OF ATTENDANCE: FT This is a full-time foundation degree that is relevant to most fields of work that employ engineers and technicians. The course leads to a foundation degree awarded by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN). It covers a wide range of engineering disciplines and will prepare you for well-rewarded work in a variety of roles. The course structure is arranged to give students both sound knowledge of modern industrial technology and also hands-on supervised experience in industry. Entry Requirements Currently 80 UCAS tariff points or equivalent (for example two A-levels or four AS-levels, two Scottish Highers or a BTEC National qualification). Course Content The programme consists of a range of modules that provide a comprehensive background in state of the art technologies. The modules include Science Design Computer-aided Engineering Electronics Mechatronics Manufacturing Technology Instrumentation Computer-based Systems Method of study You will study within our High Technology Centre, which will provide you with a lively and stimulating learning environment using up-to- date hardware and software systems. Each year there will be a 3 - 4 weeks block industrial attachment, which is part of the credit structure. Most modules are both practical and theoretical in nature; they are designed to give you hands- on experience of using modern equipment. Method of assessment Each module is assessed within the semester in which it is taught. Most modules are assessed through course work, practical experiences in laboratory work, assignments and an examination. A year-long practical project will also be undertaken that will be closely linked to an industrial application and that will include both hardware and software development. Progression routes The foundation degree will provide you with the confidence and experience to work in a variety of jobs, such as:- Systems Software Engineer Control Systems Engineer Design and Development Engineer Systems Hardware Engineer Electrical Engineer Project Engineer, etc You can study for an additional year and gain a B.Eng (Hons) Degree linked to the foundation degree.
