Course Description

Engineering: Design Engineering, Foundation Degree - Level 5 (Lancaster University) UCAS Code(s): H150 Qualification Obtained: Foundation Degree in Design Engineering About this Course: This Foundation Degree prepares learners to work in a variety of roles within the modern engineering sector. Designers produce technical specifications to match the needs of clients, taking into account industry standards and legal requirements. They apply their skills to the solution of practical problems faced by individuals, industries, other organisations and society at large. Graduates of this programme will be employer not only in the engineering sector per se, but also in other support organisations such as design houses. Competitive manufacturing and construction rely on the application of processes to convert available materials into useful products, structures and devices that have first been designed. The design function is difficult to define, but there are common themes. Most things we use at home, at work and in leisure, have not only been manufactured (engineered), but also designed. Transforming raw materials into value added products requires knowledge of manufacturing science and processing technology. Design engineers combine this technical expertise with a flair for the aesthetic appeal and saleability of their products. A good design is one that is appropriate to its use and context. Form follows function without being utilitarian. As such it must be useful, useable, desirable, producible, profitable and safe. Serviceability, maintainability and lifecycle costing must be considered, including the final disposal, or decommissioning phase. Increasingly, designers have to consider the environmental impact of their work. Design Engineering is a recognised branch of Advanced Engineering and is critical to Engineering Manufacturing and necessary to maintain UK Engineering excellence and the competitive level in the global economy. Design Engineers require a broad range of design skills and Engineering competences including: CAD, Engineering Drawing, Rapid Prototyping, as well as an awareness in Manufacturing and Product Design processes. These Engineers design product and Engineering systems from the perspective of product manufacture and as such they are critical in prototype product testing and re-engineering to maximise the ability to produce 1st generation products and 2nd generation production. Industry input is essential to ensuring that the Foundation Degree is developed in an appropriate 'industry focused' manner and that candidates who wish to take the Foundation Degree in Design Engineering, receive the most relevant information in current manufacturing thinking, as well as the new developments in this sector, whilst using the most up to date resources and software available to industry standards. The programme offers a package of 19 units. The units are seen as sections which complement each other in the first and second year of the course. The sections have been developed through close links with manufacturing industries. You will be equipped with the skills and applied knowledge that will enable you to provide twenty first century technologies to industrial situations and glimpse into what the future holds for these skills and technologies. Entry Requirements: What are we Looking for? We are looking for people who have an interest in Engineering together with appropriate academic qualifications and/or relevant industrial experience. We are also looking for people who, on successful completion of the course, will endorse our reputation for producing students with excellent employability skills. Every application is treated individually this is particularly true for mature students whose life experiences may, to a certain degree, mitigate a lack of some academic qualifications. Acceptance for entry to the programme would normally be on the basis of either: Level 3 qualification in a relevant field (UCAS tariff 120 mini
