Drug and Alcohol Misuse, Foundation Degree - Level 5 (Lancaster University) UCAS Code(s): L591 Qualification Obtained: Foundation Degree in Drug and Alcohol Misuse About this Course: The broad aim of this course is to equip you with knowledge and skills relevant to work in a range of Drug and Alcohol services and related sectors and enable you to identify and address your continuing professional development needs. On successful completion, you will have a clear understanding of the theoretical framework underpinning drug and alcohol misuse studies and, by means of a combination of reflection upon practical experience and academic knowledge, be able to take a strategic perspective on drug and alcohol services which will enable you to function effectively at a managerial or supervisory level in any of a range of services. It is extremely important to note that this is not intended as a clinical course, although the wider underpinning knowledge and understanding of key issues and practices will make it an appropriate programme for those currently engaged in clinical practice with drug and alcohol users. Entry Requirements: What are we Looking for? You will need to be the kind of individual for whom combining demanding and difficult practical fieldwork with high level reading, writing and research represent a stimulating challenge to be embraced, rather than a chore to be endured. In short, we are looking for level 3 qualified people, committed to developing their skills and knowledge at a high level in the field of drug and alcohol misuse. Is this the right course for me? If you have a level three qualification in a related subject and a desire to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the social, cultural and personal issues surrounding drug and alcohol misuse. If you are committed to working to improve the lives of people who are affected by drug and alcohol misuse, whether as a volunteer, or as a paid employee, this course is likely to be exactly what you want What Skills, Qualities and Experience do I need? Applicants will be considered individually and all candidates will be interviewed. Age is not considered to be a significant determinant for selection onto the programme, however candidates must be able to demonstrate appropriate work experience. Normally entrance would be based on the following criteria: Level Three qualifications in a relevant field (Typical profile would be 160 UCAS points). Level 3 vocational awards are also appropriate. Candidates should have at least 1 year's experience of working in drug and alcohol services on either a paid or voluntary basis. Applicants who do not meet the requirement for prior experience are given advice on obtaining further experience. Candidates will be required to undergo CRB Enhanced Disclosure certification, since they are regarded as potentially having unsupervised substantial access to vulnerable young people and adults. Blackpool and The Fylde College will carry out the required procedure. Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to undertake any placement unless or until a CRB certificate has been received. It should be noted that criminal convictions are not automatically a bar to work in this field. Students declaring convictions will be advised accordingly. Assessment Methods: Assessment strategy will draw on a variety of activities including personal and professional portfolio, essays, reports, research projects, exams, online assessment, peer review and observation in the workplace. Progression: Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) form the bedrock of the Foundation Degree Managing Drug and Alcohol Misuse and, as such, are the key benchmark against which the course is set.
