CONSTRUCTION DIPLOMA IN BRICKWORK L1 Code: 9417/1A COURSE DURATION: 36 Week(s) COURSE DATES: 07 September 2009 to 27 June 2010 MODE OF ATTENDANCE: FT This course is designed for those who wish to make a career in the building industry, specialising in bricklaying. It aims to provide you with a qualification which is appropriate to industrial practices required today. Entry Requirements GCSE grade profile of E-G or equivalent. Mature students with relevant experience and/or other qualifications may be eligible, you also need to attend an informal interview. You should be at least 16 years old and show enthusiasm for this type of work. Course Content You will cover 7 units leading to a Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying. How to carry out safe working practises in construction. Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others. Building methods and construction technology. How to carry out basic bricklaying skills. How to carry out basic cavity walling. How to contribute to setting out and building basic masonry structures up to damp course level. In addition There will also be a number of key skills in Numeracy, Literacy and Information Technology which will be developed and assessed through construction related tasks. Method of study There will be a combination of workshop based practical activities supported by formal demonstrations and classroom activities covering the required underpinning knowledge. Method of assessment You will be assessed by undertaking practical tasks which will be marked against industrial standards. These will be marked by assessors. There will also be written and oral questioning, to satisfy the assessor that you have the necessary job knowledge and understanding, as well as a multiple choice knowledge test that is externally set and marked. Progression routes On successful completion of the Foundation Construction Award in Bricklaying, you may progress to an Intermediate Construction Award in Bricklaying, or take up a position as a trainee bricklayer in industry and follow an NVQ training programme.
