What's the course about? Access to HE Diplomas are designed to prepare mature learners for higher education (HE). They have been specifically designed for people who may have little in the way of formal educational qualifications, but who bring to the course a variety of life and work experience, a desire to learn and a willingness to study. In addition to their main subjects, students have the opportunity to study literacy, numeracy and information technology. The St John's Centre also offers GCSE English and Maths. A supportive learning environment is provided by using a variety of methods, including lectures, workshops, laboratory sessions, tutorials, group-work and private study. The course is made up of four modules: - Core - Physics - Maths - Health sciences: biology/chemistry All units are assessed and graded. Assessment is continuous and ranges from written and practical tests to project work. What will I be able to do after I've completed this course? In the past, students have progressed onto university courses in, biochemistry, physics, astrophysics, mathematics, environmental science, computation, chemical engineering and material science. It can also lead to careers in engineering (mechanical / chemical / civil) and physical sciences. What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course? There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you will need to go through an Initial Assessment process which will help us to place you on the correct course and identify any possible support needs that you might have. Also, you will need to demonstrate to the course tutor that you have the commitment and skills necessary to successfully complete the course. Applicants wishing to progress into higher education need to be aware that some higher education institutions (HEIs) may have additional entry requirements (e.g. GCSE Maths and English - grade C or above), in addition to the Access to HE Diploma. Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course? This course enables the learner to obtain an Access to HE Diploma, which is a credit based, graded qualification. Access Diplomas are a nationally accepted alternative to A Levels for entry to Higher Education and are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education.
