Course Description

AS/A Level Chemistry Subject area: AS/A Levels (full-time 16-19 yr olds) Course type: Full time Course description The syllabus is divided into modules, each of which is examined separately. Chemistry is the study of materials and the changes accompanying their interaction. The power of the chemist lies in exploiting the properties of materials. Equally, it is the responsibility of the chemist to ensure that we use materials safely and for the good of all. AS/A Level Chemistry gives you a fundamental knowledge of these issues and builds on topics already covered in the GCSE. Social, economic, ethical, environmental, medical and technological aspects of chemistry are included in the course. Chemistry will provide you with a sound appreciation and basis for further related study. Chemistry is essentially a practical subject and you will spend a significant amount of time acquiring skills to enable you to carry out experiments and investigations to a high degree of accuracy and reliability. Entry requirements To study AS/A levels you will normally need: ? A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above ? It is possible to progress to university without GCSE English Language and Maths at C grade or above, but your options will be reduced if you have not achieved these qualifications and it is likely to impact on your future employment opportunities. It may be that you attend classes in one of our partner institutions. You will have a clear understanding at the interview stage about your timetable and where your lessons occur. A levels are divided into two courses, AS taken in the first year and A2 in the second year; combined together they equal a full A level. Both the AS and A2 courses comprise 2 units.
