Chemistry AS/A2 Course Level: Level 3 - Further Education equivalent to AS/A2 Level, BTEC National Diploma or NVQ3 Reference Number: QMS3SS20/BAFAP Introduction This is an excellent and exciting course building up on chemistry aspects of science, leading to a level 3 qualification that will allow progression to a wide variety of science related career opportunities including medicine, pharmacy and engineering. The AS course follows on from GCSE Double Aware Science or single subject Chemistry, introducing new topics as well as developing themes already studied previously. The A2 course adds further depth and understanding to topics covered in AS. What will be covered in the course? AS Level F321 - Atoms, Bonds and Groups: atoms and reactions, electrons, bonding and structure, the periodic table. F322 - Chains, Energy and Resources: organic concepts, hydrocarbons, alcohols and halogenoalkanes, structure analysis, energy and resources. F323 - Practical Skills in Chemistry 1: making observations, recording accurate measurements, analysing and evaluating results. A2 Level F324 - Rings, Polymers and Analysis: further study of organic chemistry, benzene, organic acids, carbonyl compounds, esters, amides, spectroscopic techniques. F325 - Equilibria, Energetics and Elements: reaction rates and equilibrium reactions, enthalpy and entropy, study of transition elements. F326 - Practical Skills in Chemistry 2: making observations, recording accurate measurements, analysing and evaluating results. Course dates and times Offered at various times, please contact us for further information. What qualification(s) can be gained? AS Chemistry (1 year) or A2 Chemistry (2 years) How is the course assessed? AS Chemistry F321 - Atoms, Bonds and Groups: 1 hour written exam in January F322 - Chains, Energy and Resources: 1 hour 45 min written exam in June F323 - Practical Skills in Chemistry 1: Internal assessment throughout the year A2 Chemistry F324 - Rings, Polymers and Analysis: 1 hour written exam in January F325 - Equilibria, Energetics and Elements: 1 hour 45 min written exam in June F326 - Practical Skills in Chemistry 2: Internal assessment throughout the year Additional costs Purchase of a scientific calculator is required, as well as one of the following recommended AS chemistry textbooks: OCR Chemistry 1, Brian Ratcliff and Lawrie Ryan, Cambridge UP, ISBN: 978-0521724562 OCR AS Chemistry, Rob Ritchie and David Gent, Heinemann Educational Publishers, ISBN: 978-0435691813 OCR Chemistry for AS, Graham Hill and Andrew Hunt, Hodder Murray, ISBN: 978-0340949092 Attendance and additional study hours Four taught sessions per week, totalling 5 hours tuition. Further information An Interview is required to join this course. We use a wide range of practical exercises and interactive website materials to add interest to the course and support student learning. Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands. A-level Chemistry is an important pre-requisite for entry into University courses in chemical sciences. It is also a valuable additional qualification for students wishing to undertake further studies in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, forensic science, veterinary medicine, conservation, biochemistry and chemical engineering.
