Chemistry Level: Level 3 - AS/A2 Full-time How long is the course/training? AS: one-year A2: one-year What will I be doing on the course/training? This two-year course is designed to provide a smooth transition from GCSE Double Science and Chemistry courses and to interface with the needs of Higher Education courses. It provides an appreciation and understanding of important chemical principles which are fundamental to the understanding of the world in which we live. The course also encourages students to come to understand how scientists investigate scientific phenomena in their attempts to explain the world around us. Students develop their practical skills to compliment their understanding of chemical concepts. The study of chemistry is useful in understanding other areas of science. The course is modular and is made up as follows: AS Level: Unit 1 Foundation Chemistry. Atomic Structure, Amount of substance, Bonding, Periodicity, Introduction to Organic Chemistry Unit 2 Chemistry in Action Energetics, Rate of Reaction, Equilibria, Redox, Halogens, Group 2 Metals and Extraction of Metals, Organic Chemistry and Analytical techniques Unit 3 Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Chemistry Course/Training Code: To be confirmed Where do I study/train? Hele Road What are the entry requirements? Standard entry requirements, including GCSE English Language at grade C+, GCSE Maths grade B, and GCSE core and GCSE additional science at grade BB, or single sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, human physiology and health) at grade 2 x B's. What can I do after this course/training? If your programme includes other Sciences and/or Mathematics, a wide range of scientific and technical courses and careers are available. You could progress to Higher Education or a career in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Pharmaceuticals, Forensic Science, Pharmacy, Medicine and related subjects. A scientific training is also widely recognised as a valid preparation for ultimate careers in a whole range of occupations from management to marketing. What key skills will I do? If you are taking a 3-AS level programme you will do a key skill to support your study. If you are taking 4 or more AS subjects we will discuss key skills at your interview. You will be taught through lectures, practical, problem solving and discussions. You will have access to fully equipped laboratories and PCs with many useful interactive CD ROMs. You will be assessed in January and May/June of each year. As the course is modular, each module exam is from 1 to 2 hours in duration. This course has no coursework but practical skills are assessed by an Externally Marked Practical Assessment (EMPA). What facilities are there? You will have access to a learning resource centre. There is a refectory based in the Hele Building. What will the course/training cost me? This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course). If you are 19 or over please contact us to find out costs.
