Course Description

BTEC National Diploma Level 3 in Vehicle Technology This full time two year course is suitable for those over the age of 16 with a keen interest in the theoretical and practical vehicle technology for those who wish to pursue a career in the automotive industry or access to higher education. The course covers a diverse range of subject areas, such as Vehicle engine principles, Business Systems and Vehicle fault diagnosis. The qualification is delivered through a variety of classroom based theory, workshop practical to complete assignments, investigation and project based study More Information You will study the following 4 core units, with a selection 13 additional optional units: Operation of Vehicle Systems Vehicle Engine Principles, Operation, Service and Repair Vehicle Fault Diagnosis and Rectification Vehicle Technology Project The additional 13 units to be selected from an optional list that may include: Light Vehicle Suspension, Steering and Braking Systems Vehicle Engine Management Systems Business Systems for Technicians Light vehicle Transmission Systems. Key skills assessments will also take place to ensure support is given to the following essential skills:- Numeracy, Literacy, communication and IT. You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the college workshops. If possible, work experience will be set up for you to gain some valuable experience in industry. Visits to local employers may also be planned You will be assessed through internally set assignments and you will be able to achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. This course requires the student to research the tasks given to them, complete a written assignment if required and hand in by the required date. Practical training will also be given. On completion of this course you could (depending on your final grade) progress onto a degree course or a foundation degree. Alternatively you could seek employment in the automotive industry. All students will study the valuable key skills of communication, application of number and IT and may gain additional qualifications that are valued by employers and are an entry requirement for other courses. You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety shoes for the course and these must always be worn during practical activities in the workshops to ensure safety is maintained. Students will require a basic tool kit with a prescribed minimum content which can be purchased through a college scheme at a competitive price.
