Course Description

BTEC National Diploma in Engineering Level 3 This Full Time, two-year course is suitable for those with a keen interest in theoretical and practical engineering disciplines and wish to pursue a prosperous career as an specialist engineer in various industries including Marine, Civil, Aerospace, Automotive. There are eighteen units to complete that cover a diverse range of subject areas such as; mechanical principles, business systems, engineering materials and Computer Aided Design. The qualification is delivered through a variety of theoretical type learning (classroom based) and may also involve the use of virtual reality type interactive equipment and specialist workshop equipment to complete assignments and project based study. The staff who deliver the course are enthusiastic, well qualified and experienced in the engineering industry. More Information You will study the following 6 core units, with 12 additional units: Business Systems for Technicians Communications for Technicians Science for Technicians Mathematics for Technicians Project Mechanical Mechanical Principles Additional 12 units need to be selected from a optional list that includes: Engineering Materials Drawing and CAD for Technicians Engineering Design Quality Assurance and Control Key skills assessments will also take place to ensure support is given to the following essential skills:- Numeracy, Literacy, communication and IT. You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the college workshops. If possible, work experience will be set up for you to gain some valuable experience in industry. Visits to local employers may also be planned. You will be assessed through internal assignments and externally assessed assignments and can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. This course encourages the student to research the tasks given to them, produce a written assignment if required and hand in by required date. Practical training will also be given. On completion of this course you could (depending on your final grade) progress onto a degree course or a foundation degree. Alternatively you could seek employment in the engineering industry. All students will study the valuable key skills of communication, application of number and IT, thus gaining additional qualifications, which are valued by employers and are an entry requirement for other courses. You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety shoes for the course and these must always be worn during practical activities in the workshops to ensure safety is maintained. Technical drawing instruments and a calculator will also need to be purchased within the first term to be able to complete all the aspects of the course - these can be purchased through the college.
