BTEC First Diploma Environmental Science Attendance Full-time (more than 16 hours per week) Duration 1 Year Level This is a Level 2 course Times It is planned to offer this course in the academic year 2010/11. How to Apply/Enrol Application Form to be returned to Learner Services Course Outline The course comprises two BTEC First Certificates: BTEC First Certificate in Countryside and the Environment and BTEC Applied Science. This is to facilitate progressions to the BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science which can lead careers or Higher Education study in environmental topics. Profile BTEC First Certificate in Countryside and the Environment: Introduction to Environmental Studies, Ecological Techniques, Surveys and Records, Waste and Pollution Control and Management BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science: Chemical Science Applications, Physical Science Applications, Biological Systems. Additional Information You will be supported by staff who genuinely care about your success. We will provide support and encouragement in order for you to succeed. You will have a personal tutor who will offer guidance and counselling as necessary. To ensure all learners are enrolled on the right course of study, the first few weeks of the programme will be an extended induction period. During this time your communication, numeracy and study skills will be assessed as well as your own preferred method of learning. Your behaviour will also be monitored, including your time management and attendance. Towards the end of the induction period, your course tutor will review your progress. If your course tutor believes the programme does not meet your requirements an appointment will be arranged with you (and possibly your parents) to discuss this assessment and a suitable alternative. This may include further assistance from the Advice and Guidance Team based in the college. Funding LSC Remission Available Opportunities 1. Entry into, or development within, land-based, laboratory, technical and scientific employment. 2. Progress on to other courses such as BTEC National Award, National Certificate and National Diploma in Applied Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Health and Social Care, Beauty Therapy Science etc. The National Diploma in Applied Science provides an entry route to the BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied Biology (at Wirral Met) or to university courses in the environment. Entry Requirement Entry to the course is subject to interview and ideally you will have one of the following: 4 GCSE's at grades D-G (to include Science, Maths and English) Other level 1 related qualifications Basic communication, literacy and numeracy skills at level 1 are normally required. Information Technology - Basic computer skills would be an advantage but are not essential as good training is provided. Mature learners will be redirected to the Pre-Access Science course which is based on the same qualification. Before starting your course, you will take assessments in literacy and numeracy to make sure that you are working at the right level. If English is not your first language, you may need an English Language assessment before enrolling on this course. To discuss further, please contact the English Language Unit at the College.
