BTEC First Diploma (Pre-Apprenticeship) in Engineering & Welsh Baccalaureate Course Outline This 1-year BTEC Diploma is a practical, work related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It covers the basic knowledge and technical practical skills, providing a good foundation for future career opportunities, or progression onto a more advanced work-related qualification. A BTEC Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs, at grades A* - C and may be taken as a full-time or part-time course. You will also study an NVQ Level 1 in Performing Engineering Operations, to supplement your theoretical studies. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to 1 A level. Due to the structure of this course, on completion you will leave the College with 2 qualifications equivalent to 3 A-Levels, greatly enhancing your future opportunities. Entry requirements You will normally need to have at least one of the following: A Foundation GNVQ in Engineering, appropriate GCSEs (normally at least four passes at grade G or above, to include Science, Mathematics and a subject testing the use of English), appropriate knowledge and/or experience gained in employment, Engineering Manufacturing NVQs at Level 2, or other experience appropriate for this level of study. In addition you will be invited to attend an interview. Applications from mature students are most welcome. What will I study? The course is made up of nine units - three core units that everyone takes and six specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study a particular area in more depth. You will also study the Key Skills of Application of Number, Communication and ICT. The core units you may study are: Applied Science & Mathematics for Technicians; Working Practices and Using & Interpreting Engineering Information. You will also study six specialist units, such as Computer Aided Engineering (CAD); Electronic Devices & Communications; Application of Quality Control & Measurement in Engineering; Engineering Materials and Engineering Marking Out. For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales ?fits in? with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising. How will I be assessed? The course is assessed by a range of methods, including practical projects, assignments, case studies and course work. Your portfolio will be graded with an overall grade for the qualification awarded. Career Opportunities & Progression A BTEC First Diploma can develop the skills you need to start or progress in careers such as: Computer Aided Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The qualification provides the underpinning knowledge required for Performing Engineering Operations Production NVQs at Level 1. It also provides a good grounding to go onto a more advanced course such as the National Award or Certificate in Engineering Disciplines, e.g. electrical, aerospace, mechanical and automobile.
