BTEC First Certificate Applied Science (Forensic) Attendance Full-time (up to 16 hours per week) Duration 18 Weeks Level This is a Level 2 course Times Starting 21 Jan 2010: Twelve Quays: Tue 13:00-14:00, Wed 09:00-15:00, Thu 09:00-15:00, Fri 10:00-16:00 It is planned to offer this course in the academic year 201011. How to ApplyEnrol Application Form to be returned to Learner Services Course Outline First Certificate qualifications are nationally recognised vocational awards that will provide you with a solid foundation in various aspects of science. Profile The First Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You will learn and be assessed by completing assignments and projects that are based on work situations, activities and demands. You will also learn about employment opportunities that are available. First Certificates are equivalent to 2 GCSEs and provide a springboard to employment or further study. The course is made is made up of 3 mandatory units : Chemistry Applications Physical Science Applications Biological Systems Additional Information You will be supported by staff who genuinely care about your success. We will provide support and encouragement in order for you to succeed. You will have a personal tutor who will offer guidance and counselling as necessary. To ensure all learners are enrolled on the right course of study, the first few weeks of the programme will be an extended induction period. During this time your communication, numeracy and study skills will be assessed as well as your own preferred method of learning. Your behaviour will also be monitored, including your time management and attendance. Towards the end of the induction period, your course tutor will review your progress. If your course tutor believes the programme does not meet your requirements an appointment will be arranged with you (and possibly your parents) to discuss this assessment and a suitable alternative. This may include further assistance from the Advice and Guidance Team based in the college. Later courses may be charged at a different rate. Fees quoted are on an individual student basis only. Opportunities First Certificates are valued by employers and further education and so successful completion of the course can offer: Entry into, or development within, laboratory, technical and scientific employment. Progress on to other courses such as BTEC National Award, National Certificate and National Diploma in Forensic and Industrial Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Beauty Therapy Science etc. Entry Requirement You must be at least 19 years old when you commence study, and in full-time employment (at least 20 hours per week), preferably in a field related to your intended degree course. In addition, you must possess a Full Level 2 qualification including GCSE Maths, English, and Science grades C or above (preferably A or B). Equivalent level 2 Science qualifications will be considered. Applicants will be interviewed and given an assessment task. Factors considered during the interview include academic potential, motivation, relevant experience, and organisational and communication skills. You will need to demonstrate that you can study successfully at a level equivalent to A-Level and have good English and Maths skills. It is preferable that you also have some IT skills. In addition to lesson time, you will be expected to complete at least 10-15 hours of independent study per week in order to complete the course successfully.
