Aims of the Course To provide students with a background level of understanding and professional competence across the range of development skills required within rural communities. To produce students who have a wide ranging understanding of the integration between the disciplines as well as a detailed knowledge of individual subject content. Course Contents Year 1 (Cert HE) Interpreting Data Introduction to Global Environmental Issues Introduction to Sustainable Rural Development Personal Effectiveness and Study Skills Principles of Ecology Social Geography of the Highlands and Islands Options include: Economics and the State Introduction to Social Policy Qualification gained at this point: Cert HE Sustainable Rural Development Year 2 (Dip HE) Development: Policy and Theory Empowering Communities Interpreting Risk Permaculture Urban-Rural Divide Options include: Environmental Conservation Project and Financial Management Qualification gained at this point: Dip HE Sustainable Rural Development Year 3 (BSc) Globalisation & Sustainable Development Literature Review Research Management Skills Strategic Environmental Management (SEA &EIA) Research Project Options include: Tourism and the Environment Qualification gained at this point: BSc Sustainable Rural Development Year 4 - (BSc Hons) Double credit Dissertation module Social Enterprise and the New Economy Engaging with External Agencies Sustainable Energy and Waste Minimisation Environmental Ethics and Sustainability Biodiversity Capital Planning Project European Political Economy Landscape Ecology Planning and Theory Practice Science and Society Qualification gained at this point: BSc (Hons) Sustainable Rural Development Duration of the Course Full time - 4 years. Part time study over a longer period is possible. Individual modules may be taken on a free-standing basis, subject to entry with a reasonable expectation of success. Progression Further study may include related postgraduate education. Employment in a related field eg. community education, community development, REAP [Rural Environmental Action Project] or Leader-funded employment. NB. Students have the flexibility to exit at either levels 1 or 2 with a Certificate of Higher Education award or a Diploma of Higher Education award, respectively, in Sustainable Rural Development. Students may graduate with a BSc (Ord) in Sustainable Rural Development at the end of year 3. Honours graduates of this programme are accredited with Associate status of the Institute of Economic Development. UCAS Information Course Code - D453 Short form of Course Title - BSc/RD Entry Requirements 3 Highers or GCSE/As or A level qualifications or progress through an access programme. For mature students without traditional qualifications the course team look for a portfolio of alternative knowledge of the required skills and experience. Admission to the degree programme is on the understanding that the individual applicant may have a reasonable expectation that they will be able to fulfil the objectives of the programme and achieve the standard required for the award.
