Course Description

Course Code: N6200 Study Type: Full Time Academic Level: Higher Ed Awarded by: University of Surrey Course Length: Three years full-time (day classes). Extended enrolment option up to six years. Course Summary: The full-time, three-year Biomedical Science course has been designed with employers to provide you with the specialist skills and knowledge for a successful career in diagnostic hospitals or veterinary laboratories. You will gain a solid foundation in modern biological science which will also prepare you for employment in industry (diagnostics, pharmaceutical and biotechnology). The honours degree course in Biomedical Science is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Course Details: It is a three-year course with students attending college several days per week for 32 weeks per year. The course begins in mid September. Instruction times may begin at 9:00 am and may extend to 6:30 pm. Applicants unable to attend on a full-time basis should contact the course leader to discuss alternative arrangements. The course is modular and students will complete eight modules each year (see below). Full-time students are taught a core curriculum with part-time students who are working in laboratories. Thus you will have the opportunity to find out from your classmates what it is like to work as a biomedical scientist. Assessment is by examination, coursework and a research project. Modules: - Cell Biology - Anatomy and Physiology - Chemistry for Biology - ICT and Study Skills - Laboratory methods. - Biology of Disease - Biochemistry - Molecular Biology and Genetics - Pharmacology and Toxicology - Haematology and Transfusion - Clinical Biochemistry - Cellular Pathology - Clinical Immunology - Molecular Genetics - Medical Microbiology As a full time student you will take additional modules to enhance your background knowledge of disease processes and laboratory experience. In addition you will complete a research project as part of your honours degree. Career Progression: In addition to careers in hospital diagnostic laboratories, students completing this course commonly find careers in veterinary laboratories and the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries. You can also progress to an MSc or PhD in biomedical science or another biological discipline. Requirement You will normally need to have at least one of the following and GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above or equivalent: - 3 A Levels at grade C, including Biology and Chemistry or - 240 UCAS points or - BTEC National Diploma at grade MMM or - Foundation course in science or - Access to Higher Education Certificate Overseas students will need minimum IELTS score of 6 to show competence in English.
