Biology Qualification type GCE A Level What are the aims of this course? This course will further develop many of the typical topics you studied at school and it will introduce some of the exciting areas of biology in the modern world, for example, the influence that genes have on development, environmental issues and aspects of human health. In addition to gaining some understanding of the dynamic and exciting nature of biology today, you will develop an awareness of the ethical, technological and economic aspects of the subject. Biology is a practical science subject so you should expect to undertake some experimentation. What are the areas covered by this course? On the AS Level (Year 1) you will study: - Biology foundation (cells) - Human health and disease - Transport systems in mammals/plants - Practical assessment What are the areas covered by this course? On the A Level (Year 2) you will study: - Central concepts (energy use in organisms) - Physiology and behaviour of mammals - Synoptic paper - Practical assessment What qualifications do I need to do this course? Five GCSEs at grade C or four at grade B, including Maths and English. You will have achieved a grade C in GCSE Science Double Award and Mathematics. How is the course assessed? The course will be assessed through a combination of modular examinations and a practical component. The practical component will be assessed by coursework which will be carried out in class and assessed by your subject tutor. The work will later be moderated by the examination board. Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course? On successful completion of the course you will be awarded an AS Level in Biology and an A Level Biology. You will also have the opportunity to complete the Key Skills Certificate. What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course? Successful completion of the course, in combination with other AS Levels, A Levels or BTEC Nationals, can lead directly to a wide range of higher education courses. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course. What are the career opportunities? AS/A Level Biology can be used in a wide variety of career areas, including veterinary science, medicine, dentistry, optics, nursing, pharmacy, radiography, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, zoology, sports science, forensics, neuroscience and microbiology, horticulture or agriculture.
