Beauty: Professional Practice (Beauty Therapy), Foundation Degree - Level 5 (Lancaster University) UCAS Code(s): B393 Qualification Obtained: Foundation Degree in Professional Practice (Beauty Therapy) About this Course: The Foundation Degree in Professional Practice is split into four 'strands' or subject areas available namely, hairdressing, beauty therapy, complementary therapies, and sports & rehabilitation therapies. This course addresses the underpinning scientific basis of practice, namely the human sciences of human biology (anatomy, physiology, pathology), behavioural (psychology, sociology) and medical science generic academic skills, personal transferable skills and professional general and technical skills. The programme is structured to develop skills and competence of practitioners. There are generic outcomes in terms of personal transferable skills, generic academic competencies and profession specific outcomes relevant to each professional route. The general academic competencies are academic literacy and numeracy use of business information systems, application of knowledge in practice, synthesis of ideas, hypothesis generation and testing self reflection and identifying learning needs sourcing knowledge and enhancing performance. The personal transferable skills are working in teams, effective communication verbally and in writing, problem solving in the work place, client management, time management and work place organisation. Entry Requirements: What are we Looking for? Entry requirement for the course is 80 UCAS points or equivalent or a Level 3 qualification in an associated vocational skill. If the candidate does not have a level 3 vocational qualification in their elected subject then they will be timetabled into the level 2 (year 1) and level 3 (year 2) groups within the school. This means that during the two years course of the FD the student will also acquire the level 3 subject specific skills. Is this the right course for me? The Foundation Degree in Professional Practice is designed to allow students with an interest or skill in beauty therapy to enhance their understanding by acquiring higher level academic skills. What Skills, Qualities and Experience do I need? At the heart of the Foundation Degree in Professional Practice is workplace experience. Many of the modules and hence the assessments are written towards the workplace. It is absolutely essential that the student has access to work experience so that they can develop skills, both generic and subject specific. Assessment Methods: There are a variety of assessment method used throughout the course to enable you to demonstrate your skills and understanding of the subject matter. They would include: Reflective synthesis from logbook data Essays and written reports Poster presentations Verbal presentations Objectively structured professional exams (OSPE) Multiple choice questions (MCQ) Seen and unseen formal exams Viva voce exams. Special Features: Central to the Foundation Degree is work experience. You will be required to undertake 200 hours per year of logged experience in a working environment. The scope of what would be classed as WBL is wide. At its heart lies the opportunity to apply newly acquired skills and practices into the workplace, learn from the application, and to develop a reciprocal relationship with the employer whereby there is value and gain for both parties. It is envisaged that the employer will engage into the process by supporting you in your development and allowing you access to challenging areas. Your experience and achievement will be cross referenced to your personal development plan so that a full and thorough log of development may be seen.
