AS Psychology Is this course right for me? Psychology is the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour, applied to both human and non-human animals. Psychology is the fastest growing subject at AS level which reflects how interesting the subject is and the potential for high achievement. What will I be learning? This course is for individuals interested in the complexities of thinking and behaviour. There is much opportunity for research, debate and argument and a willingness to consider viewpoints extending beyond your personal belief is desirable. Psychology is an invaluable subject as it combines equally well with other subjects from Arts (e.g. English), Sciences (e.g. Biology) andor Humanities (e.g. Sociology). The course follows the edexcel specification and is assessed by two examinations, of respectively 80 and 100 minutes duration. Unit 1 will investigate Social Psychology (e.g. obedience) and Cognitive Psychology (e.g. memory). Unit 2 will investigate three approaches to development in Psychology (psychodynamic, biological, learning) focusing on Gender Development. Each topic incorporates short practicals and consideration of Research Methods in Psychology. How will I learn? During the 4.5 hours of lessons per week a wide range of strategies are used to engage students and to aid the understanding of challenging concepts. These strategies include traditional lecturing and note-taking student research and presentation group work discussions and debates quizzes role play and peer learning. In addition, there will be a formal timed assessment each week. Tutors offer individual support and there is access to resources and activities via the college's Virtual Learning Environment: Moodle. Furthermore, it is a requirement that the recommended textbook be purchased to assist with learning. What else might I want to know? Psychology is not counselling or a therapeutic tool for self-analysis. As Psychology is a new subject to most individuals, it is important that you read some background information about the subject before considering applying. It is a requirement that the recommended textbook be purchased to assist with learning. What can I do afterwards? Successful completion of the AS qualification can lead to undertaking the A2 Psychology programme. Alternatively, employment in any person-centred profession (e.g. nursing, journalism, marketing), will be assisted by the knowledge, transferable skills and experience of studying AS Psychology.
