Applied Science (Forensic) - BTEC National Diploma (Level 3) Number of Weeks 34 Hours per Week 14 Who is the programme for? For those students who have a keen interest in general science and how industry applies the three main disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Also to gain an insight into how Technicians and Scientists work and how they respond to issues presented. How long does it take to complete? 2 years What qualifications do I need? What is the programme structure? There are 19 units delivered over 2 years. Delivered largely through practical work, investigations, visits and guest speakers Key Skills If you are aged 16-18 and following this course as a full time student your programme will include tutorials, enrichment activities and the development of key skills. Key skills are recognised and valued by employers and universities and are an important part of your course as they will help to improve your performance and confidence at college and in the future. Are there any special facilities for the programme? The College has specially equipped science laboratories. How is the programme assessed? 19 units, assessed by a large number of assignments continually across the 2 years. There are no external examinations, with the exception of key skills. Will there be any extra costs involved? There will be additional costs for laboratory coat (?8-10), stationery pack (?15) and trips/visits (around ?50). you may qualify for remission of these costs. What if I need support? The College provides a range of learning support for students who like extra help with their studies. BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science. Examining/Validating Body Edexcel/BTEC. What can I do next? Progress to a career in one of a variety of science technician roles, including: Medical laboratory testing; materials testing; biotechnology; microbiology; forensic science or to higher education vocational qualifications such as BTEC Higher National Diploma, a foundation degree or a degree in the sciences. Completion of the course with 19 passes provides students with the UCAS equivalent of 120 points. Students can achieve more UCAS points by obtaining grades of Merit and Distinction in some or all the units.
