Applied Science (Forensic) - BTEC First Diploma (Level 2) Number of Weeks 34 Hours per Week 12 Who is the programme for? For those students who have a keen interest in science but who also wish to gain an insight into how Technicians and Scientists work. How long does it take to complete? 1 year What qualifications do I need? What is the programme structure? It is a modular programme with six modules studied during the year. The course is delivered largely through laboratory practical work, investigations, lectures and visits. Key Skills If you are aged 16-18 and following this course as a full time student your programme will include tutorials, enrichment activities and the development of key skills. Key skills are recognised and valued by employers and universities and are an important part of your course as they will help to improve your performance and confidence at college and in the future. Are there any special facilities for the programme? The College has specially equipped science laboratories. How is the programme assessed? There are no external examinations although there are external tests for key skills. Assessment is through a number of assignments, practical investigations, internal tests and presentations. Regular attendance at lectures is key to success. Will there be any extra costs involved? GCSE revision Guides for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, purchase from good bookshops. Laboratory coat (?8-10), stationery pack (?15) and visits/trips (cost of coach and entrance around ?50) you may qualify for remission of fees What if I need support? The College provides a range of learning support for students who like extra help with their studies. BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science. (Equivalent to 4 GCSEs.) Examining/Validating Body Edexcel. What can I do next? Progress with a merit grade to National Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic) or in another related subject area. Employment as a junior science technician in e.g. quality control or education.
