Course Description

Full time Animal Welfare-BTEC First Diploma This course is an excellent introduction to the animal care industry with a highly practical content, providing you with a broad base of experience. If you are interested in working with companion animals e.g. catteries, animal sanctuaries, pet shops, veterinary nursing or animal charities then this course is for you. The course will also provide you with the basis to gain higher qualifications. Students are required to complete an Industrial experience placement which is agreed with the College, student and work experience provider. There are six units to be covered from the following: Industrial Experience (compulsory) # Industry and Organisations (compulsory) # Animal Care (compulsory) # Habitat Establishment and Maintenance # Animal Health (compulsory) # Animal Science (compulsory) # Retail and Customer Service # Breeds and Grooming # Animal Establishments # Care of Exotics # Animal Nursing # Key skills One unit needs to be covered from a range of optional modules. During the course you will have the opportunity to study a variety of animals, e.g dogs, reptiles, amphibians, cats ,rabbits, rodents, birds, fish and farm animals. Four days a week will be spent in College with one day based industry. In addition students study an NVQ Level 1 or other additional qualifications and key skills. Clothing and Equipment: It is ESSENTIAL that you have the following: *Safety footwear, *green boiler suit, *rubber gloves, *plastic apron (only if choosing grooming module). These can be purchased from the college shop during induction. Students undertaking practical lessons must also have a 10.00 deposit for a locker. The following items are optional but advisable: # Waterproof clothing # Dust mask # Calculator Induction: A general college induction will take place during the first week, please ask your tutor during this time if you have any queries. You will need to meet staff involved with your course, familiarise yourself with the College and meet your fellow students. Opportunities to purchase Personal Protective Equipment will be made during this week. It is ESSENTIAL that students have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination.
