Course Code: N5001 Study Type: Full Time Academic Level: Level 2 Awarded by: EDEXCEL Course Length: 1 year full-time, 19hrs per week. (The majority of the formal tuition is spread over 3 and a half days per week) Course Summary: The full-time Animal Care First Diploma is a one-year, work-related course. It covers the basic knowledge and technical, practical skills that you will need to progress to more advanced study or to gain employment within the animal care industry. Course Details: The course is made up of 6 units. These are studied throughout the year in combination with a 6 week work experience block. ModulesUnits: Animal Accommodation, Handling & Care: Provides an introduction to the essentials of animal care. Introduction to Animal & Plant Biology: Introduces the basic concepts of biology - considers the functional characteristics of all living organisms, the cellular basis of life and the diversity of organisms. Animal Health, Welfare & Behaviour: Explores the importance of responsible pet ownership. Also, introduces the aims and principles of first aid, and commonly occurring injuries. Animal Care Industry and Organisations: Introduces the principal organisations that are likely to have an impact on the animal care industry and relevant British legislation governing legal duties. It goes on to explore European legislation. Animal Establishments: Introduces a variety of animal establishments found in the United Kingdom and to the working practices within them. Work Related Experience in Animal Care: Students are required to complete a minimum of 6 weeks work experience. Through this students will have the opportunity to develop their own skills and performance and to demonstrate their ability to work effectively. Assessment Units are assessed through the use of projects, assignments and practical work on the Nescot Farm, with a range of companion and agricultural species. Each unit has a series of pieces of coursework, and sometimes tests, to complete and these help to make up your overall grade for the unit. Successful work is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Each piece of coursework has to be graded at least a Pass in order to pass the unit and each unit has to be passed in order to achieve the First Diploma qualification. Career Progression: The First Diploma provides a good foundation for progression onto a more advanced work-related qualification such as a National Diploma, National Certificate, or National Award in Animal Management. A merit or distinction on the First Diploma is necessary for such progression. Some students choose to go into full-time animal work in a variety of establishments including Farm Parks, Kennels, Zoos, Veterinary Hospitals and Dog Groomers. Other Information: A First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSE's Grade A* to C. Students are normally expected to complete a package of courses including Key Skills qualifications in Communication, I.T. and Application of a Number, at an appropriate level. Students are required to provide steel toe capped boots, overalls and waterproof clothing for practical work. Details of the costs of these will be available at your interview. Requirement You will need one of the following: 4 GCSEs including Grade D in English and Science. Successful completion of NVQ1 Animal Care in one year satisfactory reference from NVQ course team level 1 in Key Skills Communication (or equivalent). You will also need to have demonstrated an interest in working with animals. This might have been through a part time job, voluntary work or work experience at school. If you are a mature learner or if you can show sufficient levels of previous animal related industrial experience, alternative qualifications may be considered to support your application.
