Course Description

Full Time Animal Science FdSc This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for successful employment in animal management, the animal welfare sector, animal sciences or progression to an undergraduate degree. Plumpton College's Animal Care Unit has developed substantially to include areas specialising in small mammals, aquatics, exotics, veterinary nursing and a dog grooming unit. Full use is made of the college's 600-hectare farm with its range of livestock including cows, pigs, sheep and horses. Subject Areas Areas of study include anatomy and physiology, behaviour, ecology, nutrition and health. Students also have the chance to opt for either science or business-related subjects when choosing their modules. Choices include animals in education, wildlife management, conservation management, managing financial resources and business planning and development. The work placement provides a valuable insight into the industry and possible contacts for future employment. Study Pattern The course is delivered through a mixture of lectures, fieldwork, laboratory-based practicals, group workshops, guest speakers and site visits. Students opting to take the Wildlife Conservation module have the opportunity to go on the college-run trip to South Africa. Career Opportunities Career opportunities include animal welfare, zoological parks, education and animal advisory services. Graduates may also progress to degree-level study. Level 3 Key Skills will count towards the tariff score. General Studies will count towards the tariff score. International Baccalaureate: 24 points, certificates considered. QAA-approved access course: acceptable. GCSE (minimum grade C): at least 3 subjects including English language and mathematics or a science. HNDHNC: Applicants will be assessed individually in relation to their previous academic achievements which will be mapped against the requirements of this programme. They may be accredited with full module credits for up to 50 per cent of modules. IELTS (English proficiency): 5.5 overall, 6 in writing. Location: Plumpton College
