Access to Higher Education - Medical Science Attendance Full-time (up to 16 hours per week) Duration 1 Year Level This is a Level 3 course Times Starting 7 Sep 2009: Twelve Quays: Mon 10:00-16:00, Tue 10:00-16:00, Wed 10:00-15:00, Thu 12:00-14:00, Fri 10:00-16:00 Starting around 6 Sep 2010: Not yet timetabled It is planned to offer this course in the academic year 201011. How to ApplyEnrol Application Form to be returned to Learner Services Course Outline This course is a preparation for entry to a Degree or Higher Diploma course in Medical Science subjects: Physiotherapy, Radiography, Dental subjects, Biomedical Science etc Profile Three Modules are studied, The Module options are: Biology Physics Chemistry In addition, there is a compulsory Core Skills module, which includes: Study skills Career development Maths ICT Credits are awarded for the Access course modules. A total of 60 credits are available: 15 for each of three subjects and 15 for Core Skills. To achieve the Access Diploma, you must gain all 60 credits, including a minimum of 45 credits at Level Three. Additional Information Please note that the interview and assessment process will last approximately 2 hours. Later courses may be charged at a different rate. Fees quoted are on an individual student basis only. Opportunities Progression to university to study science courses, including Biomedical Science, Physiotherapy, Radiography. Some exceptional candidates may be considered by HE institutions for Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science but enquiries with those institutions should be made before embarking on the Access course. Obtaining the Access to HE Diploma in Medical science does not guarantee entry into any HE course. Entry Requirement Applicants should have been in employment since leaving school, preferably in a healthcare environment, and must be at least 19 years old when they commence study and should possess at least Full Level 2 qualifications (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade C or above) including Science, Maths and English. Applicants will be interviewed and given an assessment task. Factors considered during the interview include academic potential, motivation, relevant experience, and organisational and communication skills. You will need to demonstrate that you can study successfully at a level equivalent to A-Level and have good literacy and number skills. It is preferable that you have some IT skills, but you will be given an opportunity to acquire these. In addition to lesson time, you will be expected to complete about 16 hours of independent study per week. If English is not your first language, you may need an English Language assessment before enrolling on this course. To discuss further, please contact the English Language Unit at the College.
