For Home students over 19 receiving certain state benefits, the 20 enrolment is charged and not refundable. In all other instances, you will be charged the Home-EU or Overseas Fee. About the course: AS/A2 Mathematics can be studied in various ways, depending on the modules you would like to complete. 4 areas of Mathematics are available: (C1, C2, C3 and C4) Pure Mathematics extends your knowledge of such topics as algebra and trigonometry as well as introducing new ideas such as calculus. If you enjoyed the challenge of problem solving at GCSE using mathematical techniques, then you should find the prospect of this course very appealing. (M1) Mechanics is about describing mathematically the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them, from cars in the street, to satelites revolving around a planet. Mechanics also involves turning a complicated physical problem into a simpler one that can be analysed and solved using mathematical methods. (S1) Statistics involves analysing and summarising numerical data in order to arrive at conclusions about it. The course extends the range of probability problems covered at GCSE by using the new mathematical techniques studied on the pure mathematics course. (D1) Decision Mathematics involves learning how to solve problems involving networks. You will study a range of methods of algorithms, which enable such problems to be tackled. Many of these problems and their algorithms are of recent origin. Students study 3 modules in the 1st year AS C1, C2 and another 3 modules in the 2nd year A2 C3, C4 plus either D1 or M1 or S2 Assessment: The course is assessed externally using the Edexcel Examinations in June. After the course: After the completion of the course, you could go for a career in engineering, computing, statistics or commerce where a high degree of mathematical ability is required.
