Course Description

The central aim of the International Foundation Programme in English is to raise the level of the students’ standard of English. This programme gives students an opportunity to become familiar with educational practices, cultures and expectations that are different from their home countries. Students are introduced to concepts such as seminars, student-centred classes, presentations, group-work, peer-evaluations, referencing practices and independent learning. Throughout the course, students will be required to perform tasks that they may never have experienced before, such as debating a topic in a seminar, giving a PowerPoint presentation, drafting an essay plan which demonstrates linear logic and reading a text critically in order to engage in a debate on a specific topic. To become familiar with such necessary academic practices is essential preparation for study in a UK university. This is another key aim of this Foundation Programme. The aims of the International Foundation Programme in English are: to enable International Students to achieve effective linguistic and communication skills in English within a supportive framework which recognizes their needs and potential; to provide International Students with a knowledge of key academic practices used in HE which they can use in undergraduate study in the UK; to increase intercultural awareness and understanding; to equip International Students with generic or transferable skills for use in the discipline of their choice.
