Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science and Technology Code SMOP Centre Cosway Street Centre Length 3 Years This course is suitable for: Adults Higher Education and Degree students We are the largest UK provider of training and education in the field of healthcare science and technology, with an intake of over 100 students per year. We have over 30 years experience in delivering high quality courses in this field, and are justly proud of our international reputation in this regard. We are enhancing our curriculum offer with a Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science and Technology. The course has been designed in conjunction with the Association for Ophthalmic Science Practitioners (AOSP), with a view to the requirements of State Registration. The course is validated by Middlesex University, enjoys full AOSP accreditation. The duration of the course: Three years, part-time. The course is offered on a day-release basis. College attendance is one day per week during the academic year, on Wednesdays. The course starts on September 10th 2009 at 0900hrs. What it includes: The course covers the following subject areas: * Personal Development and Professional Practice * Ethics, Law and Healthcare * Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology of the Visual System * Physical, Geometric and Physiological Optics * Systemic Diseases and Ocular Manifestations * Ophthalmic Pharmacology * Clinical Assessment of the Ophthalmic Patient * Ophthalmic Imaging * Communication, Promoting Equality and Special Needs * Healthcare Informatics * Glaucoma, Visual Fields and Ophthalmic Neurophysiology * Binocular Vision, Embryology of the Visual System * Audit, Quality Assurance and Research * Assessment for Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Minor Surgical Assisting * Assessment of Clinical Practice using the AOSP-approved logbook Where it is based: The course is delivered at the Colleges Cosway Street Campus, Cosway Street, London NW1 6TH. What is needed in order to get on to it: The following qualifications, or ones equivalent, are required: * Employment in the UK working in the field of Ophthalmic Science and Technology and * Numeracy and English language (written and spoken) equivalent to GCSE Grade C (British Council IELTS - Band 6.0) and * 1 A-level in Science (which can be Maths) or * BTEC National Certificate in Science or * BTEC National Award in Science or * NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare or * Advanced GNVQ or AVCE Science or * Access to Science The above will gain you automatic entry to the course (up to the maximum numbers for the course, which for 2007 is 25 places allotted in order of date of application form receipt). The first two requirements are non-negotiable. Other academic qualifications offered, as equivalent to those given above, will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants without the standard entry qualifications but with significant work experience in this field, who may be a mature student, are very welcome to apply (and may be interviewed to confirm their ability to succeed on the programme). What it will cost: Fees for the academic year starting September 2009 will be ?1582yr. This fee is inclusive of all tuition and the support of workplace assessment. This is a vocational course, and so students must have access to a Workbased Assessor (WBA) within their department. Their department must provide training and assessment opportunities for the student in each of the areas of Clinical Practice listed above (or arrange seconded opportunities). The fee includes the training of the Workbased Assessor.
