Course Description

Course information: Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care Course summary: This is a two-year programme which will provide learners with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to succeed in a range of careers within the exciting field of health and social care. The course actively promotes good practice and will allow students to draw upon their experiences whilst developing new work based skills, knowledge and understanding within the fields of health and social care. Course content: To achieve the whole qualification, a student must successfully complete: Year one modules Ethics, Personal and Professional values Understanding People Introduction to Health and Social Care Research Assessment, Care Planning and Identification of Risk Professional Skills Development Working in Health and Social Care Settings 1 Social Problems Year two modules Legislation and Social Policy Research Applications Advocacy and Empowerment Working in Health and Social Care Settings 11 Community Care Health Promotion 1 Work experience is fundamental to successful completion of this qualification, either through permanent full or part time employment or through a collaborative work placement. There are three modules which incorporate work experience on the course and students will be expected to spend an equivalent of 50 hours at level one and 100 hours at level two within work-based settings. Students can fulfil the ??-placement?? criteria in a range of health and social care settings and may draw on either paid or unpaid work they already engage in. Assessment procedure: Students work will be assessed and graded through a variety of methods including essays, reflective essays, presentations, research tasks, observed role pay exercises and time constraint tests. Entry requirements: Students are required to have experience of working in health and social care settings, or a Level 3 qualification. All students are strongly recommended to have at least a Level 2 qualification in literacy, or be able to demonstrate skills in literacy at Level 2 or above. Interested candidates are requested to complete an application form, attend an informal interview and provide two references to ensure their suitability for the course. Qualifications achieved: Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care Progression opportunities: Students can progress on to the third year of the BA (Hons) in Health and Social Care at the University of Sunderland. The Foundation Degree will strengthen opportunities to progress on to a social work course. It will also give the opportunity for career advancement in health and social care fields.
