Foundation Degree in Garden Design Course Level Level 5 Course Description This is a three year part-time course leading to a professionally recognised qualification and providing training for those interested in entering into the garden design industry. The course is aimed at individuals aspiring to become professional garden designers. You will develop specific knowledge of all aspects of garden design to include site analysis and surveying, the art and science of plant use, graphic and rendering skills, CAD, and elements of garden history and conservation. By the end of the course you will be equipped with the practical, managerial and academic skills to successfully design gardens and run a small business. You will also develop a range of transferable skills and knowledge, including business and contract management, creativity, innovation and problem solving.The approach will include lectures and demonstrations, practical and creative drawing sessions, site visits, and the design of several ??-real gardens. There will also be the opportunity to design and build a show garden. Through work experience you will develop the skills needed to work with a range of different clients, and to liaise with those in the horticultural and construction industries. Awarding Body Course Content Level 4 Modules: Principles and Art of Garden Design Principles of Horticulture - Plants and Soils Graphic Communication and Illustration Surveying, Site Analysis and Client Liaison Personal and Professional Development - Preparing to be a Garden Designer Personal and Professional Development - Designing a Show Garden Work Based Learning - Constructing a Show Garden Work Based Learning - Garden Design and Society Level 5 Modules: Planting - Design and Maintenance Hard-Landscaping and Construction Garden History and Conservation of Heritage Gardens Computer Applications and CAD (Vectorworks2009) Personal and Professional Development - Contract Management and Specification Writing Personal and Professional Development - Running Your Own Garden Design Business Work Based Learning - Preparing to Work in the Garden Design Industries Work Based Learning - Your Role as a Garden Designer - Specialist Project Additional Qualifications Top up to full honours degree at Bishop Burton College Career Progression Career paths including:Garden Design; Working for landscape contractors, architects, property developers; Heritage/botanical gardens. Campus Work Experience There are four specific work based modules in which students are encouraged to find suitable work experience to further their education and experience within the garden design sector. You will negotiate work experience or a placement with your tutor. Assessment Garden design project, backed up with detailed drawings and portfolio evidence; written exam; practical assessment; learning diary/reflective log; case study; individual and group presentation. Attendance Course Length and Study Pattern Three years part time. One day per week, 9.00am - 4.00pm. Students will have access to college facilities outside of classroom hours (within college open hours).
