Foundation Degree in Environmental Conservation Course Level Level 5 Course Description Validated by York St John University This Foundation Degree provides you with an opportunity for training in sustainable land management using the beautiful Yorkshire Dales as an outdoor classroom. The modules studied will allow you to gain a knowledge and understanding of the countryside and to develop the skills required to manage it. As well as covering the underlying science, the course provides you with an opportunity to develop practical skills such as biological surveying and drystone walling together with professional skills such as report writing and project management. You may also have the option to study additional professional courses alongside the Foundation Degree, such as certificates in chainsaw and pesticide use. The course can be studied full-time over two years or as a part-time evening course over three years. Awarding Body Course Content Subject specific modules may include: Biological Survey Techniques Countryside Recreation Environmental Education and Urban Conservation Volunteer Management Geology, Soils and Vegetation Habitat Management Land Use Issues and Policies Landscape History Manual Practical Skills Principles of Ecology Project Management Sustainable Woodland Management Additional Qualifications n/a Career Progression Top-up to Honours Degree Employment in a range of countryside jobs at management or technical level Campus Work Experience Work related learning is an important part of this course. You will negotiate work experience or a placement with your tutor. Assessment A wide range of assessment methods are used, which may include practical fieldwork, reports, presentations, case studies and open book exams. Each module is assessed individually and there are no end of year exams. Attendance Course Length and Study Pattern The course can be studied in two ways:- 1) Full-time over 2 years. 2) Part-time one evening a week over 3 years. Entry Requirement Satisfactory reference and the following: 100 UCAS points; from A Levels or equivalent e.g. BTEC National Certificate, Award or Diploma in Countryside Management GCSEs English Language and Mathematics (grade C or above) or equivalent Students with relevant HNCs may be able to transfer credit in certain modules onto the Foundation Degree. Students without the necessary qualifications but with relevant work experience are encouraged to apply.
