Course Description Are you: currently employed in an Early Years setting? looking for professional development opportunities to enhance your career prospects? hoping to study towards a degree in Early Years while you carry on working? If so, then now is the time to apply for the Foundation Degree in Early Years at Kensington and Chelsea College! The Foundation Degree is a part-time course, validated by London South Bank University (LSBU), running on one day and one evening per week in college over two years. A bursary may be available through your local borough What background and qualifications do you need to join? To apply for the Foundation Degree you need to: ? be 18 years of age or over ? be employed in an early years setting - a nursery, a primary school or similar establishment for the full duration of the course ? have an appropriate level 3 qualification in childcare, for example: CACHE Diploma in Childcare & Education, BTEC Diploma in Early years (at Merit grade or above), with two years post-qualification experience in the Early Years sector. ? successfully complete the course admissions procedures, including assessment and an interview. What does the course lead to? The course follows a design approved by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and opens opportunities for further study and qualifications. While the Foundation Degree is a qualification in its own right, you can progress to an Ordinary or an Honours degree after further study. Alternatively, you can undertake the work-based Registered Teacher Programme, leading to Qualified Teacher Status. Please note that if you wish to progress to teacher training you will need to have, or to obtain GCSE A - C in Maths, English & Science. What are the facilities and equipment like? Marlborough Centre is less than 5 minutes walk from South Kensington tube station, between the Fulham Road and the King's Road. The centre is situated above a Primary School and the location gives you immediate access to the local museums, and many child care and education settings Students have the use of a specialist child care & education library with relevant books, journals and CD ROMs. There is student access to the intranet and printing, and a Student Advice & Guidance surgery weekly. Every student is given the opportunity to rent a personal locker for the duration of their course. The common room provides hot drinks, snacks and comfortable seating. London South Bank University has an extensive range of student facilities including a fully equipped library and learning resource centre. Students can also access learner support. How much should I study outside class? You will need to set aside a minimum of 6 hours each week in your own time in order to complete. How is the course assessed? This course is assessed through termly assessments and a work based learning profile, there are no exams. Are any course materials online? Course materials are available on the KCC Student intranet What books and equipment do I need? You will need to buy your own writing materials such as pens and paper, as well as provide yourself with course files. You will also need to buy core textbooks, details of these will be given to you when you begin. The cost of these may be included in the local authority bursary. What else do I need to buy? What extra costs are there? Occasionally you may be asked to pay for travel and entry to museums, theatres or conferences that are relevant to your course.
