Course Description

The study of Community Health and Social Care tackles a wide range of issues in the care sector, investigating the practical care needs of a community. The Foundation Degree brings together the two seperate strands of social and health care and also provides a combination of academic work based skills amd knowledge. The programme is delivered in conjunction with the Universuty of Wolverhampton and successful completion can be followed by a one year course leading to an Honours Degree. The programme is suitable for anyone who wants to move into Health and Social Care profession, or is already working in this field and wants to develop their skills and knowledge. Entry Requirements One 'A Level' or 80-140 points Exceptions may be made for mature students with relevant experience and alternate qualifications such as NVQ's. Course Content This course is run 1 12 days per week over 2 years. Level One Modules:- Study Skills in Health and Social Care This module aims to provide the opportunities for students to gain the fundamental study skills needed to order to succeed on the programme. The module includes preparation for class sessions, work with fellow students and assessment strategies. Promoting Health in Health and Social Care Settings This module enables students to identify health promotion opportunities for the client groups they work with. Health promotion models and the psychological factors are explored and their appropriateness to the client group identified. Reflecting on Practice, Methods and Theories This module enables students to demonstrate their personal and professional development. Students gain an understanding of professional practice and recognition of the theoretical underpinnings of practice. Studying Health in the Community This module seeks to provide a broad foundation in health and social studies by looking at various influences on health in the community and the individual. The Policy Context, Local, Regional and National Influences This module examines the ideological, political, legal and administrative base of health and social care policy in Great Britain. It focuses upon continuity and change within social policy at local, regional and national levels. Therapeutic Relationships This module provides an introduction to a range of communication concepts and strategies which will enable students to develop therapeutic and professional relationships with clients, carers, families, service users, inter-disciplinary team members and others. These will include verbal and non-verbal communication modes, self-awareness, negotiation skills, anti oppresive strategies, and skills of dealing with adverse situations, aggression, anxiety, grief and loss. Physical Health and the Individual This module aims to give an understanding of physical health through investigating the human structure and function. This along with an understanding of common measurements of physical aspects of health, will be related to the health of an individual. Level Two Modules- Management and Leadership in Health This module will allow participants to study management and leadership within Health and Social Care and contribute to the skills development necessary for high quality service provision. Contemporary Issues in Health and Social Care This module is designed to enable the student to discuss current debates within the Health and Social Care arena. It focuses upon issues which are relevant in work settings and encourages the student to address differing perspectives. Furthermore it examines the definition of 'social problems' as a means of placing Health and Social Care issues in a theoretical context. Emotional Health This module provides the opportunity to explore issues surrounding emotional well being and social organisation. It will draw upon medical, psychological and sociological explanations of emotional health and will seek to develop the critical abilities of the learners with regards to theory.
