Foundation Degree in Applied Animal Management Who is the course for? This is a broad-based applied animal management programme aimed at anyone interested in working in the animal care, animal management or science professions. It is also particularly useful to those people working in the industry, who wish to gain a university level qualification. What will I study on the course? There are 8 units of study in year one, covering basic underpinning as well as a number of specific vocational units including applied animal management, animal health and welfare. In year two there are a further 6 units of study including behavioural ecology and a substantial research project. Year 1: ? Land-based business management ? Work experience ? Biological classification and identification ? Applied animal husbandry ? Animal anatomy and physiology ? Basic concepts in animal nutrition ? Animal health and welfare ? Basic laboratory and veterinary analytical techniques. Year 2: ? Research project ? Experimental design and analysis ? Genetics, reproduction and breeding ? Animals in society ? Habitat and environmental enrichment ? Behavioural ecology. The course is taught using practicals, visits, case studies and in-class lectures. What makes this course special? ? Staff teaching on the course are well qualified to do so. All staff has at least BSc (Hons) and relevant industry experience ? The qualification has been designed in collaboration with the industry ensuring that you will develop the necessary skills and knowledge needed for employment ? You will have access to excellent resources and facilities including our Animal CareEquine centre and very well equipped laboratories ? We have a College centre at Paignton Zoo and you will have the opportunity to visit ? Learning is time tabled over two days per week to allow you to secure part time employment if desired. What do our students say? Students who have studied on the programme frequently comment on how enjoyable their experience has been. They value the practical aspects of the programme as they find that a greater range of job opportunities are available to experienced graduates. How will I be assessed? Most units are assessed using a combination of coursework, including case studies, practical reports oral presentations and essays (60%) and formal examination (40%). Some units, such as the project are 100% coursework. How long is the course? Two years full-time. Will this course lead to a qualification? Yes. A Foundation Degree in Applied Animal Management from Bournemouth University. What can I do on completion of this course? ? A one year top-up to an Honours Degree at Cannington Centre ? Employment- a range of challenging and exciting opportunities including animal welfare organisations, animal collections, wildlife parks, pest control. How much will it cost? The course fee is ?2,160 per year 200910. You should also allow approximately ?115 for buying books and lab equipment such as your lab coat and safety spectacles. All full-time students starting in 2009 can apply for a loan to cover their entire tuition fee and a means tested maintenance loan, of up to ?4,950 (less if you live at home) to help cover living costs. Students from low income families may be eligible for a non repayable Maintenance Grant of up to ?2,906. Applications for all loans and grants need to be made through Student Finance England. Students in extreme financial hardship may be eligible for further funding via the Access to Learning funds by applying direct to Bournemouth University.
