Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Zoo Resource Management The course is designed as a two year part time, block release course based at Sparsholt College. Applicants should preferably have a City & Guilds Advanced National Certificate in Management of Zoo Animals, or equivalent, and have regular employment (in excess of 20 hours per week) in the zoo community or associated occupational area. Applicants should have been employed for at least one year in a relevant animal collection such as a zoological or wildlife park, garden, nature centre. Exceptions to this are considered please contact the College for further information. Entry is invited for September 2007. The deadline for applications is 30 June 2007. Course content The course content is a balanced programme of modules relating to management of animal collections. In the first year modules include Information, Communication and Learning Technology, Introductory Science, Anatomy and Physiology, Reproduction Biology, Animal Nutrition, Animal Behaviour and Welfare and Zoo Animal Behaviour. In the second year modules include an Applied Industrial Research Project, Conservation and Education, Breeding Programme Management, Business Planning and Finance, Equipment and Staff Management. Both years include Work Based Development units (in year 2, a 1 week exchange placement to a different location forms part of the work development unit). Course programme Course programme delivery is via a series of formal lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals and workshops, visits to zoological collections and use of visiting speakers. The assessment programme is based around assignment work for each module in both years. Assessments will include presentations, reports, posters and portfolio building. Tutorial support occurs during residential blocks and also by visit(s) to the workplace. Programme delivery is via fortnightly blocks (two blocks per year) of study at the College. Accommodation can be on site at Sparsholt College or arranged locally.
