Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Sport Fisheries and Aquaculture Foundation degrees are courses with a stronger emphasis on work based and practical learning than traditional BSc courses. The Foundation Degree in Sport Fisheries and Aquaculture is designed to meet the needs of the fishery management and aquaculture industry for practically skilled employees with a good technical and scientific background. Successful students can progress to Year 3 of the BSc programme Course programme The Foundation Degree is a two-year course, linked with the first two years of the BSc (Hons) Degree programme. There is an emphasis on vocational skills with numerous visits to fish farms, fisheries and research centres as well as the involvement of students with fish farmers, fishery managers and the support of industries. Subjects studied include: water quality fish anatomy and physiology fishery management and ecology aquaculture fish health and nutrition. During the course, the students spend at least 12 weeks on industrial placements working on fish farms, fisheries, processing units and research establishments both at home and abroad. Recent placements include Scottish salmon farms, specimen carp fisheries in England, France and Spain, a tilapia farm in Jamaica, river keeping on local chalk streams, the London Aquarium, the Fish Disease Laboratory at Weymouth and a bait manufacturer, to name a few. Entry requirements Passes in at least three separate subjects in GCSE to include English and Maths and a relevant National DiplomaCertificateAward at overall Merit level or at least one A Level pass or equivalent academic qualifications or appropriate professional qualifications.
