Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Lowland Woodland Management This full-time course aims to provide the knowledge and experience required for those wishing to enter the diverse aspects of woodland management with emphasis on the importance of sustainable management and conservation of lowland woodlands. Course programme The Lowland Woodland Management course covers practical and academic topics relating to woodland and forestry management covering the UK. The course places emphasis on the diverse aspects and challenges involved in woodlands in the lowlands. Topics covered include Woodland Ecology and Conservation, Silviculture, Sustainable Woodland Management and Mensuration, and Harvesting Practice together with Urban and Community Woodlands, and Business and Human Resource Management. The course incorporates a one-year work placement which allows students to gain invaluable industrial experience. Placements are varied and may be with The Forestry Commission, The Ministry of Defence, private estates or The National Trust, to give some examples. Some students have also taken overseas placements. Along with the main learning programme, students will be given the opportunity to undertake practical competence qualifications in chainsaw usage and other disciplines. These are additional to the course and may attract a small extra charge. Entry requirements Passes in at least four separate subjects in GCSE to include English and Maths; and a pass grade in a relevant National Diploma/ Certificate/Award; or at least one A Level pass; or Equivalent academic qualifications; or appropriate professional qualifications. Career progression Following this course, career opportunities are varied and range between Forest Officer with The Forestry Commission, The Ministry of Defence (managing woodlands for military training and conservation purposes) and private management firms (managing woodlands for private clients and trusts and conservation bodies). The subject area of the course is diverse and allows for employment opportunities in a wide range of woodland and urban forestry areas.
