Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Horticulture (Landscape Practice) The Foundation Degree in Horticulture Landscape Practice option will offer plant, environmental, landscape skills and the enhance level of technical landscaping knowledge necessary for students to work at management level. Course Programme Landscaping is a rapidly developing career opportunity area. This course comprises industrial updating and higher skill development, which are very functional in nature, whilst being innovative, contemporary and sustainable in content. Students study a wide range of subject areas with a holistic approach and these include not only the technical skills of Site Assessment and Responses and Construction Skills but the selection and use of sites, practical skills, facilities, equipment and staff for successful established and new horticultural enterprises. Students equally spend a considerable amount of time developing their practical construction skills in the effective use of materials and plants in the industry and, in their final year, undertake a major investigative project. This provides an opportunity for using the College's many contacts throughout Hampshire and beyond. Areas of study on this course include: ? Site assessment and responses ? Design with materials ? Construction skills ? Plan interpretation and implementation ? Design with plants ? Project development ? Plant health and environment management Entry Requirements 40 UCAS credits in Advanced level study (equivalent to 1 A Level at E grade or PPP in National Diploma); or National Diploma in Horticulture; or Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture; or RHS Advanced Certificate or Diploma in Horticulture; or mature students with a keen interest, or students with non-traditional qualifications are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis. Part-Time Study Part-time study options may be available. Please contact the College for details. Career and Progression Opportunities Students successfully completing the Foundation Degree in Horticulture with the appropriate grades, may progress on to a full BSc (Hons) course in Horticulture with a further one year of study on a full-time basis. Graduates entering employment will typically enter the industry as practising horticulturalists, working on sites within the private and public sectors. Opportunities may also exist within heritage organisations or, with the development of a greater range of landscaping skills, in the contract sector of the industry. The course emphasises a holistic approach to landscaping management, combining an understanding of client requirements, concepts of design and realisation and an appreciation of the role of plants within the overall landscape environment. As a result completing students have augmented their increased technical knowledge with entrepreneurial and small business skills to enable them to be a success in this challenging sector.
