Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Horticulture The Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Horticulture is intended to provide students with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to pursue a career in this wide and varied plant based industry, including private domestic gardens, national organisations and commercial companies or in a self-employed capacity. The two-year, full-time programme will provide students with an understanding of the principles and practices which underpin effective horticultural progress. Course programme Horticulture is a rapidly developing career opportunity area. As more interest is developed across the UK in plant selection, propagation and production, homeowners are generally developing an increased awareness of the positive benefits and value of home production through the influence of media sources, so the demand for well-trained staff and quality UK grown plants increases yearly. This course comprises industrial updating and higher skill development, which are very functional in nature, whilst being innovative, contemporary and sustainable in content. Students study a wide range of subject areas with a holistic approach and these include not only the technical skills of plant identification and propagation but the selection and use of sites, growing media, facilities, equipment and staff for successful established and new horticultural enterprises. Students equally spend a considerable amount of time developing their horticultural skills in the effective use of materials and plants in the industry and, in their final year, undertake a major investigative project. This provides an opportunity for using the College's many contacts throughout Hampshire and beyond. Areas of study on this course include: ? Plant identification and reproduction ? Media management ? Industrial skills ? Plant health and environment ? Investigative project Entry requirements Forty UCAS credits in Advanced level study (equivalent to one A Level at E grade or PPP in National Diploma); or National Diploma in Horticulture; or Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture; or RHS Advanced Certificate or Diploma in Horticulture; or mature students with a keen interest, or students with non-traditional qualifications are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis. Part-time study Part-time study options may be available. Please contact the College for details. Career and progression opportunities Students successfully completing the Foundation Degree in Horticulture with the appropriate grades, may progress on to a full BSc (Hons) Degree in Horticulture with a further one year of study on a full-time basis. Graduates entering employment will typically enter the industry as practising horticulturalists, working on sites within the private and public sectors. Opportunities may also exist within heritage organisations or, with the development of a greater range of plant propagation skills, in the contract growing sector of the industry. The course emphasises a holistic approach to horticultural management, combining an understanding of plant growth requirements, concepts of plant health and an appreciation of the role of plants within the overall landscape environment. As a result completing students have augmented their increased technical knowledge with entrepreneurial and small business skills to enable them to be a success in this challenging sector.
