Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Arboriculture and Tree Care This full-time course aims to provide practical and academic knowledge and experience for those wishing to enter the arboricultural and tree care management industry. Course programme The Arboriculture and Tree Care course covers the practical and academic topics relating to tree care management and trees and woodlands in the urban environment. The course includes areas of Tree Science, Tree Hazard Assessments & Reports, Establishment & Aftercare, and Pest & Disease Management, together with Urban Woodlands, Machinery and Business Management. There is a one-year work placement within the course which gives essential industrial experience, underpins the academic study in the first year and gives invaluable preparation for the final year's studies. Industrial placement years may be spent with local authorities, utility companies or arboricultural firms. Along with the main learning programme, students will be given the opportunity to undertake practical competence training in chainsaw use and tree climbing. These are additional to the course qualification and may attract a small extra charge. Entry requirements Passes in at least four separate subjects at GCSE to include English and Maths; and a pass grade in a relevant National Diploma/Certificate/Award; or at least one A Level pass; or equivalent academic qualifications; or appropriate professional qualifications. Career progression Due to the increasing importance and awareness of trees in the urban and rural environment, there is a demand for tree management and expertise. Career opportunities may be in local authority work as a tree officer, urban woodland management, tree hazard assessment and commercial or self-employed arboriculture businesses.
